ICCV 2021 Mentorship Social Sessions
All times are Eastern Daylight Time

Monday, October 11              4:00 PM – 6:00 PM

Thomas Y. Chen and Tori Yao       Computer Vision for Earth

Deep learning and computer vision applications in the Earth sciences are wide-ranging, from the analysis of Earth observation data to the remote sensing of carbon emissions. Computer vision is a nascent tool to leverage to combat and adapt to climate change. At this social event, we convene researchers working at the nexus of geosciences and AI (particularly computer vision). The format is informal talks from two invited speakers and then a facilitated discussion among all attendees. If there is remaining time, we hope to stream a few talks and/or posters that we identify as relating to the AI-Earth nexus. We seek to elevate voices from regions with limited access to conferences and underserved communities. All are welcome, as we promote diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Tuesday, October 12              8:00 PM – 10:00 PM

Matthew Toews and Daniel Wedge    ICCV 2021 Music

This event is designed to bring together musically interested individuals from the ICCV 2021 community. Participants are invited to share a piece of music or art, e.g. a video, an insight, or even a live virtual performance. Any instruments, pieces or skill levels are OK (keeping in mind the ICCV code of conduct and general tolerability, e.g. no offensive or painful noise). Original or unique music, with links to math and vision are particularly encouraged. The Fundamental Matrix song by Daniel Wedge will be featured. Interested performers may fill out the signup form in advance: https://forms.gle/FLkYStxauTUBEGwbA

Wednesday, October 13       10:00 AM – 12:00 PM   AND   Thursday, October 14   6:00 PM – 8:00 PM

Jennifer Hobbs and Sujoy Ganguly         Lapsed Physicists Wine-and-Cheese

"Lapsed" (aka. Former) Physicists are plentiful in the machine learning community.  Inspired by Wine and Cheese seminars at many institutions, this BYOWC (Bring Your Own Wine and Cheese) event is an informal opportunity to connect with members of the community.
Hear how others made the transition between fields. Discuss how your physics training prepared you to switch fields or what synergies between physics and machine learning excite you the most. Share your favorite physics jokes your computer science colleagues don't get, and just meet other cool people. Open to everyone, not only physicists; you'll just have to tolerate our humor.  Wine and Cheese encouraged, but not required.

Wednesday, October 13         1:00 PM – 3:00 PM

Maja Pantic and Ning Zhang       Facebook AI - Women Create

"Facebook AI - Women Create" Social Event focuses on motivating women in Computer Vision and Machine Learning to connect with local and international industry women in AI at Facebook.
How do we want to do this? We will deliver key messages about what we work on and what we value in Facebook through a combination of technical presentation & panel discussions to be delivered by leading female researchers in Computer Vision and Machine Learning in Facebook. We will share insights on:

* The freedom to explore CV & ML in Facebook showcasing specific technical examples of our products
* Motivation to stay at Facebook in ML
* How to prepare for the Post-doc and Research Scientist interview process
* Women who do well at Facebook / how we evaluate people
* How well does Facebook support women in AI in career progression

Who will be the main participants? Organisers: Maja Pantic & Ning Zhang. Technical Speakers: Shengxin Cindy Zha, Marija Jegorova and Natalia Neverova. Panelists: organisers, technical speakers and Joelle Pineau.

Thursday, October 14     12:00 PM – 2:00 PM    AND     Friday, October 15   12:00 PM – 2:00 PM

Liliane Momeni, Niveditha Kalavakonda, Arushi Goel and Tejaswi Kasarla     Women in Computer Vision (WiCV) Social

WiCV Social will bring together young and experienced women researchers in industry and academia to network, share and discuss a wide range of topics such as - How to progress in research? How to maintain a work-life balance? Keeping up with the growing pace of research in computer vision? How to develop good networking and presentation skills?

Friday, October 15   8:00 AM –  10:00 AM

Bryan M. Williams and Ritesh Vyas        H-Unique: Novel Biometrics and Forensics

Hard biometrics, such as fingerprints, are well understood and some soft biometrics are gaining traction within both biometric and forensic domains. A significant step change is required in the science to both reliably and repeatably extract and compare anatomical information from large numbers of images especially when the target is not in a standard position or when either the resolution or lighting in the image is not ideal.

Large datasets are vital for this work to be legally admissible. Through citizen engagement with science, we are building a ground-truth dataset of images from over 5,000 participants to examine anatomical variation, address the effects of variable image conditions on data extraction and to design algorithms that permit auto-pattern searching across large numbers of stored images of variable quality.

This event will be a forum for networking, discussion on the intersection of forensics, biometrics and computer vision, and provide an opportunity to take part in our citizen science dataset.

Friday, October 15   12:00 PM –  4:00 PM

Ching Lam Choi and Samarth Sinha             Undergraduates in Computer Vision

The UG in CV Social is designed to connect undergrads in theoretical & applied Computer Vision research worldwide; to mingle, network, collaborate & innovate. We strive to compile & share resources about breaking into CV research & industry as undergraduates, via sharings, AMAs, student panels, with perspectives from renowned academics, industry leaders and fresh graduates.

* Format: The social will span ~4 hours, comprising 4 keynotes (2 each from academia & the industry), 1 student panel, 1 mingling/networking session, starting at EDT 12:00 pm and ending officially at 4:10 pm. * Invited Speakers: Professor Animesh Garg (University of Toronto, NVIDIA), Professor Zeynep Akata (University of Tübingen), Professor Hugo Larochelle (Google, Université de Montréal), Dr. Nan Rosemary Ke (Deepmind), Mr Samarth Sinha (Facebook), Mr Stephen Tian (Stanford), Mr Alex Yu (UC Berkeley), Miss Ching Lam Choi (CUHK, NVIDIA).

**Get Involved:** Please feel free to ask speakers and panelists anything here: https://forms.gle/B7bDZRaAvWNrg7hz8 (closes on Oct 14)!
